Customer company profile
Vattenfall Europe is a leading European energy company whose main products are electricity and heat, which it supplies to several million customers in Scandinavia, Germany and Poland. Vattenfall Europe is the German subsidiary with its headquarters in Berlin. Additional information about the company can be found at www.vattenfall.de.
Both wearing and using gloves properly is vital
For Vattenfall Europe, workplace safety is essential for keeping its operations running smoothly and the energy company makes accident prevention a top priority. The introduction of specific Vattenfall Europe safety plans has meant a dramatic reduction in accidents and illnesses.
Vattenfall Europe is the third largest generator of electricity and the largest producer of heat in Germany. Most of its electricity comes from coal-fired plants, but Vattenfall Europe also operates nuclear and hydroelectric power plants and is getting involved with other renewable energy sources such as wind, biomass fuels and geothermal energy. Vattenfall Europe Mining & Generation is the company’s largest division in Germany, with about 8,000 employees.
The challenge: to produce power in a safe environment
The health and safety of its workforce is an important factor in Vattenfall Europe’s strategy. „Our employees have to feel comfortable in their jobs,“,says Wolfgang Leber, Safety Manager at Vattenfall Europe Mining & Generation. „We have to protect them from injury, but also make sure they are able to do their jobs in the best possible conditions.“
For these reasons, Vattenfall Europe’s safety plans include strategies to guard against major accidents, as well against minor injuries, skin irritations and allergies. There is a constant need to stay focused and find even better protective methods. Of course it helps to be able to count on the support of a professional partner who knows your needs and works closely with you in finding the right solution for all your requirements.
The solution: Ansell, an energetic partner
The stringent internal safety procedures used at Vattenfall Europe are reviewed on a regular basis, an important factor particularly when a new chemical or machine is introduced. What could be better than having a specialist like Ansell working with you to make the right decisions? Acting as a true partner, Ansell is able to advise and help Vattenfall Europe decide which protective gloves deliver the best results in terms of operating safety in each work area. Each type of glove used is tested and monitored regularly for usage, wear and results. So Ansell is not only capable of supplying the right products for each job, but also of analysing results and providing the advice needed to ensure that Vattenfall Europe always has the best and most suitable protective equipment. „Ansell is always on hand to conduct an analysis,“ says Mr Leber. „Once their adviser has seen what our requirements are, he suggests suitable gloves which are then selected from a range of possible products following tests in which they are actually worn. He monitors the test phase and then, once we have agreed on a product, the safety plans are adapted accordingly.“
The use of Ansell gloves is now widely accepted by Vattenfall Europe employees. More that 60% of the total workforce of 8,000 wear protective gloves for their work. Staff are also encouraged to make optimum use of the gloves. As Mr Leber puts it, „Of course wearing gloves is important, but only after making the right choice. There is a correct glove for each job!“Ansell also helps in this respect, providing personalised training courses, safety manuals and even posters which are displayed in each work area. Workers have to feel that they are using the right glove – one that feels like a second skin and does not handicap them in their work.
To ensure that employees can find out for themselves which gloves best suit their situation and to place their orders, Vattenfall Europe has used the company intranet to place the full list of available glove types in its internal PSA catalogue.
The benefits: advice, productivity and cost-savings
„Ansell is very dependable partner which comes up with innovative solutions to every problem,” says Mr Leber. “For example, we were bowled over by their new AlphaTecTM glove and immediately saw great potential for it at Vattenfall Europe.“
